Playa del Carmen is a walkable beach town at heart, but the second you want to hit a further beach, do a grocery run, or explore Playacar, getting around becomes the question. Here are the real options, and the tradeoffs nobody tells you about.
Walking & 5th Avenue
Most of the tourist zone is walkable. 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) is pedestrian-only and runs the length of town. Great for dinner and shopping, less great when you are hauling beach gear or it is 33°C.
Taxis
Everywhere, but no meters, so agree the price first. Fine for a one-off, but a week of taxis adds up fast and you are always waiting on one.
Colectivos
Shared vans down Highway 307, cheap and great for Tulum or Akumal day trips. Not useful for getting around town itself.
Scooters, golf carts & electric cruisers
This is the sweet spot for freedom. Scooters are cheap but two people max with no shade. Golf carts are roomy but pricey. A 3-seat electric cruiser splits the difference, room for the crew, a shady roof, zero gas, and it parks anywhere.
